With the third pick of the 2018 NFL Draft the New York Jets have selected Sam Darnold, QB – USC. The Jets watched the Cleveland Browns select Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick and therefore the consensus top quarterback in this class has fallen to the New York Jets at pick number three.
Sam Darnold Selected by the New York Jets
The Jets traded up from sixth overall with the Indianapolis Colts to get the third overall pick, ensuring that they were a key player in the quarterback sweepstake’s at the top of this years draft. This trade now looks to be one of the savviest moves in recent memory, as the Jets have managed to pick many scouts top quarterback without giving up a future first round pick.
Sam Darnold is only 20 years old and often shows that raw nature of his game – ball security has been an area of concern for Darnold during his time at USC. Fortunately for the Jets, they have a plethora of quarterbacks already in the building and therefore can afford to let Sam Darnold mature at his own pace.
Arguably the safest quarterback prospect in this years class, Darnold has the ability to make all the throws and extend plays with his legs. Whilst he might need some time to elevate his game to the next level, Jets fans should be ecstatic with this selection.
Darnold has displayed the character traits to survive the media circus in New York. Following a solid draft last season, the Jets continue to add young talented pieces to an up and coming roster.
