With the eighth pick of the 2018 NFL Draft the Chicago Bears selected Roquan Smith. The former Georgia Bulldog will come in and be an instant starter in a young and dynamic defense in Chicago. With Vic Fangio in control of the defense in the windy city you can fully expect the defense to improve on it’s top-ten ranking from a year ago.
Roquan Smith Selected by the Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears defense has plenty of young talent all across the defense. After retaining corner Kyle Fuller in free agency they no longer had a need in the secondary which frees the Bears up to draft the best player available.
Smith will be able to patrol the middle of the defense from sideline to sideline, acting as the enforcer in a incredibly athletic defensive unit. He has the speed and coverage instincts to be able to take away receiving threats in the middle of the field, whilst also establishing himself as a presence in the run game. A physical defensive line in front of him ensures that there’s a small chance his smaller frame gets caught up in blocking, opening up clean lanes for the natural play-maker to live in and around the backfield.
The Bears added a lot of talent in the off-season, and now look to be a talented team on both sides of the ball. If they can put it all together in 2018 – and Mitchell Trubisky takes the necessary steps to becoming the face of the franchise, then Bears fans have cause to be incredibly excited about their team moving forward.
