After the Giants picked Saquon Barkley and the Jets nabbed Sam Darnold, the Cleveland Browns went back on the clock. This one was chalk, aside from N.C. State’s Bradley Chubb. John Dorsey has his franchise quarterback and the shut-down cornerback that he desired.
Denzel Ward Selected by Cleveland Browns
Can I interest you in Myles Garrett, Emmanuel Ogbah, Christian Kirksey, Jamie Collins, and now Denzel Ward? The Browns are quickly becoming a team built on defense and electrifying plays on both sides of the ball. This pick was about athleticism, as many have been ever since Sashi Brown took over in 2016. Even with Brown out, Dorsey wanted to keep the tradition alive of picking stupid-athletic players. Denzel Ward, although a little bit short, is a lightning-quick cornerback who can jump out of the building at will.
Let’s talk about the fit that Ward has in this defense. The Browns didn’t think they needed another bruiser mountain of a man. They already had that in Myles Garrett, and didn’t really need Chubb to go with it. Rather, they took Ward to balance out the defense, rather than having an embarrassment of riches in the front seven exclusively. It will certainly be interesting to see how Ward fits among Jabrill Peppers, Damarious Randall, and the T.J. Carrie/E.J. Gaines duo at cornerback.
The Browns definitely pulled a shock here, but according to many, they got who they wanted all along. Congratulations, John Dorsey. Your first first round as Cleveland’s general manager looks to be a great success.
